What You Need to Know
When & Where
- Whale season in Tongatapu typically runs from July through to the end of October.
- The peak months for sightings, mother–calf encounters, and best conditions tend to be August and September.
- Note: weather, ocean conditions, and whale migration patterns are natural and variable — so while the season offers high chances, sightings or swim opportunities cannot be guaranteed for every trip.

Licensed & compliant operator — we operate under Tonga’s Whale Watching & Swimming regulations and hold required permits.
Safety-first mindset — strong safety protocols, experienced guides, and quality equipment.
Smaller groups — more personalized, less crowding, better experiences.
Ethical, conservation-oriented approach — we prioritize the well-being of whales and follow all marine protection standards.
Convenient access — right from Tongatapu’s main wharf without the need to travel far off-island for whale experiences.
Transparent packages — clear inclusions (gear, briefing, lunch/snacks, guide services).
Regulatory & Safety Guidelines
Tonga has regulations in place to protect both whales and participants. Some key rules and guidelines we strictly abide by include:
Swimming with whales is only legal when entering from a licensed commercial operator’s vessel with certified guides.
Group size limits: no more than 4 swimmers plus one certified guide in the water with whales at any time.
Maximum interaction time: each whale encounter is limited (often no more than 90 minutes), followed by mandatory rest periods before re-engagement.
Distance rules:
• Swimmers must not approach whales closer than 5 metres (16 ft).
• Vessels must not approach whales closer than 10 metres when dropping off or picking up swimmers.
• Only licensed operators may approach within 300 metres; non-licensed vessels must stay far away.
No SCUBA gear, artificial lighting, or loud noises in proximity to whales.
Boats must operate only during daytime hours (no whale activities between 4 pm and 5 am) and total on-water time is limited to about 7 hours per day.
Operators must maintain liability insurance, carry first aid kits, and follow maritime and safety standards.
Because we follow all of these rules, you can be confident your experience is safe, ethical, and respectful to the whales and marine environment.
Also, note:
A safety briefing is mandatory before departure, covering how to interact, entry/exit procedures, and emergency protocols.
Participants may be rotated in groups (if needed) to ensure fairness and compliance with group-size rules.
Time in the water with whales depends on whale behavior, weather, and safety, sometimes multiple short “swim drops,” sometimes one longer session.
If whales are not found, or conditions prevent swimming, guests may still see whales from the boat or reschedule where possible.
All gear (wetsuits, snorkel sets, safety flotation) is maintained to good standards.
Guides monitor conditions continuously and may cancel or abort interactions if safety or whale welfare is involved.
Safety & Health Considerations
- You should be a confident swimmer, comfortable in open water.
- Seasickness can occur. We recommend taking motion sickness medication before departure if you’re prone.
- Wear a light layer or windbreaker for after your swim as it can get cool on the boat.
- Cameras and waterproof equipment are fine, but no flash photography near whales.
- You must follow all instructions from guides for your safety and the whales’ welfare.
- Pregnant guests or guests with serious health conditions should inform us in advance; we may require a medical clearance.
- Children or weaker swimmers may be limited to boat viewing rather than in-water time.
Booking Tips & What You Should Plan For
- Book as early as possible because slots are limited, especially in peak months (August–September).
- Allow some buffer days in your travel plan as sometimes whale tours are postponed or canceled due to weather or sea conditions.
- Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and a dry change of clothes.
- Water temperature typically ranges around 24–26 °C (≈75–79 °F) during whale season that short wetsuits (2–3 mm) are usually sufficient.
- Stay flexible — the ocean is wild, and every day is different.
